You know the feeling, the moment you notice a scratch in the back of your throat or a swallow that feels weird. Chances are you're coming down with something and that scratchy sensation is your immune system beginning to wake up for a fight. This is the time to take charge of your health--and using a nebulizer is a great way to help stop AILMENTS in their tracks.

What is a Nebulizer?

Mesh nebulizer, handheld nebulizer, and ultrasonic nebulizer all refer to the same instrument: a small, handheld device with a mesh cap that converts liquid treatment into an easy-to-inhale aerosol.

Consolidating treatment into a mist of consistently sized micro-particles allows it to penetrate deeper into the lungs where harmful bacteria take hold, making treatment more effective.

Nebulizers are most commonly used to deliver medication, but they can also be used to deliver more natural solutions such as hydrogen peroxide.

Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizer and a natural disinfectant often used topically; it's incredibly effective at killing harmful bacteria, but it isn't regarded as safe to ingest...

You can, however, inhale it.

Nebulizing a dilute solution (4 parts saline to 1 part hydrogen peroxide) will powerfully support your health goal by reaching the depths of your lungs to break up the cellular structures of the stored bacteria and viruses.

Nebulized hydrogen peroxide effectively works with your body to eliminate harmful organisms, so when you feel a cold or flu coming on, nebulizing can help turn it around before it's taken hold.

When to Use a Nebulizer

The quicker the better!

Ideally, you begin nebulizing the moment you detect that first throat scratch or any other early sign of cold/flu. If you catch it early, you'll only have to nebulize 3-4 minutes twice a day.

If you get started with your nebulizer a little later in the ailment's life cycle, you can up your usage to 3 times a day. The more severe your case, the more frequently you can nebulize, up to a few minutes every hour if necessary.

I often use my nebulizer preventatively: whenever I've had exposure or suspected exposure from, say, an event, when I get home I'll do the quick 3-4 minutes.

Honestly, I cannot count the number of times I've known something in my body was brewing, and with just a couple nebulizing sessions I'm completely well, with no signs or symptoms at all!

Best Portable Nebulizer

As far as which type to use, I've used several brands from very cheap ($40 https://amzn.to/3576gSf ) to rather expensive ($150).

No matter which nebulizer you get, the teeny mesh inside will eventually degrade, which will stop it from creating the mist.

With that in mind, the expensive brand I used (Aura, the best portable nebulizer) has a method of using a diluted vinegar solution to help preserve the mesh. The vinegar solution is sucked into the machine to clean it, and the process can be done after each use. The cheaper brands don't have this feature.

The more expensive brand also has replacement "medicine" cups available ($40/each) so when the mesh eventually fails, you don't have to trash the whole unit.

Given the replacement cups are nearly as expensive as a brand new basic unit, the choice is a bit difficult to make.

It's also important no matter which model you choose, that you make sure to dry it off as best you can with a lint-free cloth after use.

I like the strength and the amount of mist from the more expensive brand but I have owned the basic units and they've gotten the job done quite well.

One thing I've noticed with all the brands is that performance in all the units is optimal when using the AC adapter and plug as opposed to using the optional battery power.

The batteries are great if you are off camping or if you find yourself somewhere without power; otherwise, as a general rule, plug it in!

Three Formulas for Mesh Nebulizing:

Saline And Hydrogen Peroxide in a Mesh Nebulizer?

Many people get a bit hesitant when thinking about breathing something into their lungs. I promise you, it's not as bad as it sounds and if you are feeling crummy, it's worth a try!

If you feel sick or you've been exposed to pathogens, using a mesh nebulizer can help deliver that very dilute hydrogen peroxide or other natural solutions deep into your lungs to help you fight off colds and flu.

Hydrogen peroxide is well known to kill germs on the skin and in teeny amounts, it can be antiviral inside too! When the mesh breaks the particles down small enough and you inhale them, they go directly to where your immune system needs help to kill whatever's growing.

Why Use HOCL in a Mesh Nebulizer?

In addition to using hydrogen peroxide, there have been other natural solutions recommended for nebulizing that include hypochlorous acid (HOCL) which is a substance produced by white blood cells to kill pathogens (see my blog on this topic). The specifics of these other solutions can be found with a simple internet search. I mostly use hydrogen peroxide or HOCL because that's the first natural, alternative inhalant I was introduced to.

HOCL is more gentle and can be used straight. Your natural health practitioner may have other suggestions.

Why Use Baking Soda in a Mesh Nebulizer?

Baking soda or the fancy name, Sodium Bicarbonate, will help immediately change the pH of the tissue to a more alkaline, which has been associated with healing. It can be very soothing to tissues exposed to chlorine or other irritating substances (contact your doctor if you believe you have been exposed to harmful chemicals)

Here's a quick, easy recipe for a solution that is safe to use in your nebulizer.
